Powerful Questions for Deeper Conversations

November 21, 2024

One simple way to connect more deeply with those around is simply to ask more powerful questions. Let’s explore the difference between close-ended questions versus open-ended questions.

The Yes or No Trap

Have you ever asked someone, “did you have a nice day?”, only to receive a generic “yes” in response? Close-ended questions are questions that can typically be answered with a quick “yes” or “no”. If you really want to find out how someone’s day was, there are ways to phrase the question that opens up the doors of exploration for the person who will respond. For example, you could ask:

  • What was the best part of your day today?
  • What was the most challenging part of your day?
  • What was the high point and low point of your day?
  • What was the most interesting thing that happened today?
  • How do you want tomorrow to be different from today?
  • What made you laugh the hardest?
  • What made you smile today?

The Power within a Powerful Question

Asking questions like these help to foster deeper connection, require a little more thought and reflection to answer, and can really get a dialogue going. Further, these questions imply “I truly want to know more about you and your life”. Ultimately, asking more open-ended questions can help to nurture a more open communication style amongst your family and friends.
