Developing Skills for Career Success

June 24, 2024

In today’s job market, the ability to develop new skills is essential for career success and longevity. Technology seems to constantly update and a shifting work landscape (like working through a pandemic) make it necessary to explore areas of personal and professional growth to stay relevant and valuable in your role. Whether you’re just starting your career or looking to advance, taking the initiative to learn and adapt can set you apart and open doors to new opportunities.

Explore and Expand

Exploring new skills begins with self-assessment and curiosity. Identify areas where you excel and where you can improve. You might also assess your workplace. What is working well, and what does the team need more of? Then, seek out resources that align with your interests and career goals. This might include online courses, workshops, certifications, or mentorship programs. Look for free LinkedIn Learning opportunities, conferences, or even a free online college course. Engaging in continuous learning not only enhances your expertise but also shows your employer your commitment to growth and adaptability.

Show off Your Skills

Be sure you note your efforts in your performance review. You might share what was valuable and relevant to your company, or what wasn’t. If there is a particular area you are passionate about, see if you can turn that into an opportunity. Potentially, you could open a door to training others, leading a project, or being the resident expert on a subject. If you’re not sure where to start, express to your leader that you’d like to expand your skills or be more valuable in some way. This conversation alone will show your dedication and could lead to opportunity.

Developing Skills is an Ongoing Process

We all have the capacity to hone natural abilities, adapt to change, or develop an entirely new skill. By consistently working to expand and hone your skills, you position yourself as a forward-thinking professional ready to meet the evolving demands of the workplace.
